The State of Myself
(Part 1)
‘The State of My Self’, is an ongoing project in which I have used the self-portraits as a mean to reflect on myself and to situate myself within the environment/surroundings in a foreign land. The photographs reflect on the mood in which they have been taken and portray the moments of confusion, or clarity that I have felt. To me, photography is not only a creative practice but also a medium of expressing myself. The photographs reflect on my technique and the process of clicking a picture, as well as on my state of mind.
The Change in place has always brought about an uncomfortable change in the state of my mind and body. Although a foreign land, Brighton still felt like any other place where I will stay for a while and then leave. Having become so used to moving to a new place, I have developed a sense of detachment from every place that I go to. Also, I was never fond of becoming the subject of my own photographs but analyzing Vivian Maier’s work (of Self-portraits) completely changed my perspective about self-portraits. As further experimented with self-portraits the more I became comfortable with myself and surroundings. Although my insecurities of being confronted by my own reflection and my detachment to the places prevailed, clicking self-portraits gave me a momentary sense connection with myself and my surroundings.
